Sockets in the workshop: where to start

· autotools

The socket is the most used tool in a workshop. A well chosen socket sits firmly on the nut and does not round its corners.

Drive size

The drive size tells you which handle the socket fits.

  • 1/4" for small fasteners and tight spots
  • 3/8" for everyday work in the engine bay
  • 1/2" for wheels and fasteners with high torque

Six or twelve point

A six point socket grips the flat sides of the nut and suits fasteners that are stuck tight. A twelve point finds its position faster but gives less grip.

Special sockets

Some jobs need their own socket: a spark plug socket holds the plug, an oil cap socket fits the oil change, and a universal socket helps when the size is unknown.
